Where EC-Drill® Makes the Greatest Impact

EC-Drill® is engineered to address complex challenges in offshore drilling, particularly beneficial with its unique pressure profile in environments with depletion and deepwater. This system significantly enhances operational safety and efficiency, making it ideal for a wide range of demanding offshore scenarios.

Explore the scenarios where EC-Drill® delivers the most value:

Pressure Management Challenges

Maintaining stable bottom hole pressure is essential for safe and efficient well construction. Whether you're dealing with narrow operating windows, depleted formations, or loss-prone zones, EC-Drill® provides a unique precise pressure profile which adapts in real time according to actual well conditions.

Controls bottom hole pressure in narrow margins.

Adjusts annular pressure dynamically as formation conditions change.

Rapid pressure adjustments help mitigate and continue drilling safely.

Controlled ECD management for achieving zonal isolation.

Environmental & Regulatory

Enhanced Drilling’s technologies support operators in meeting the industry’s environmental standards. By reducing logistics and operating time we help you minimize carbon footprint while maintaining performance.

Trip safer and faster - and avoid displacements.

Fewer displacements = less fluid, less hassle.

Reduces section count and logistics through unique pressure profile – and control.

Deepwater & Ultra-Deepwater

In deepwater environments, pressure management, complex well architecture, and risks are amplified. EC-Drill® and supporting technologies enable safe, efficient drilling through capabilities from dual gradient effect, early detection systems, and flexible pressure control across all sections.

Combine sections in deepwater operations for a simpler well design.

Completion

Finalizing the well requires control to avoid formation damage, losses, or compromised barriers. EC-Drill® technologies enable easily adjustable Bottom Hole Pressure for wireline operations, running completion assembly, and gravel packing—ensuring straightforward, faster and better Completions.

Prevents losses and enables complete pack in long horizontals

Increase the production rate by achieving a full screen out when gravel packing.

Frequently Asked Questions

EC-Drill® Operational FAQs

We receive a lot of detailed questions from drilling teams, and we’re always ready to support. To make things easier, we’ve gathered some of the most frequently asked questions about EC-Drill® and provided clear, practical answers below.

What is EC-Drill®? EC-Drill® is a Controlled Mud Level (CML) technology that allows manipulation of bottom hole pressure (BHP) while drilling a well. The system controls the BHP by adjusting the fluid level in the marine drilling riser, and thereby the hydrostatic pressure applied. This is achieved with a Subsea Pump Module (SPM) which pumps all mud and cuttings returns up a separate Mud Return Line (MRL). The system can be used to adjust bottom hole pressure at any point during well construction regardless of whether there is any pipe in the well. It can be used for many applications, including the traditional MPD application of holding BHP.

By the IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) categorization System, EC-Drill® is a Controlled Mud Level (CML) system, it controls the mud level in the marine drilling riser. As a marine drilling riser is required, the system is only applicable to offshore wells.
What are the applications? EC-Drill® is used for drilling depleted zones, narrow pressure windows, unknown pressure regimes, extending casing strings, freeing stuck tools, managing loss zones, and supporting well testing.
How fast can EC-Drill® be mobilized? EC-Drill® mobilization speed depends on equipment availability and rig integration time. The Modified Riser Joint is usually the longest lead item, typically requiring up to 6 months, though shorter lead times have been achieved.
What is the criteria of the motors (poles, power, flow range)?  The motors are 4-poled and 300-510 kW each (different types). The flow range is up to approximately 6000 l/min, depending on depth and fluid weights.
What are the main equipment elements of EC-Drill®? The main equipment elements of EC-Drill® are

  • Subsea Pump Module (SPM) – instrumented pump system used to pump all mud and cuttings to surface.

  • Control System – the computerized control system that controls and monitors the SPM and associated equipment allowing for precise control of fluid level in the riser and thereby well pressure.

EC-Drill® is a modular system that typically requires a 14ft Office Container, a 14ft Control Container, a Subsea Pump Module placed subsea and an Umbilical reel.
